CHICAGO (AP) — Gov. Pat Quinn has signed legislation ending the practice of posting a driver’s license as security after certain types of traffic citations.

Quinn’s office made the announcement late Saturday evening. The Chicago Democrat says the measure will help Illinois motorists hold onto a vital piece of identification and also allow law enforcement officials to do their jobs.

The legislation was sponsored by Democrats Sen. Michael Noland of Elgin and Rep. John D’Amico of Chicago.

It eliminates posting a driver’s license as bail for certain traffic offenses. Instead, it allows drivers to sign a citation as their guarantee that they will appear in court or pay a fine.

The “Sign and Drive” legislation will take effect immediately with the governor’s signature.
